Using RescueTime with a non-supported browser

RescueTime officially supports tracking time for websites viewed with a supported browser. There are many variants of Firefox and Google Chrome (Chromium) which are not officially supported, but you may be able to make them work by using one of our browser plugins and following a few configuration steps.

This workaround may also be useful if you run into problems tracking individual websites with a supported browser.

  1. Install the appropriate browser extension for your browser's codebase—Chrome or Firefox
  2. Sign in with the email you use for your RescueTime account. It is important that you make sure the "I'm already using the full RescueTime application on this computer." box is unchecked. It seems counterintuitive, but it will allow the plugin to record time in that browser instead of the application.
  3. Tell RescueTime to ignore generic time for that browser. Visit your All Activities report and find your browser activity in the list of activities below the chart. You're looking for just the browser, and not the individual websites that are logged with that browser—i.e., Chromium, Opera, Waterfox, etc. Click the edit icon next to the browser and then choose Ignore this activity forever. This will prevent duplicate time from being recorded by the full RescueTime app and the plugin.

Please note: This workaround does not support FocusTime meaning websites will not be blocked during FocusTime.
